Website

Virginia Birdies

My Role
Front-end web developer.
Timeline
May 23- Jun 23.

Website for local non-profit golf club dedicated to philanthropic activities in the Central Virginia area.

I was the front-end developer on the project. I planned and gathered requirements for the website. I held weekly meetings with clients to brief them on development progress.

Project Summary

This website gave the Virginia Birdies golf club an online presence and platform to showcase their club to potential members, collect inquiries about the club and give relevant information such as upcoming events.

The Challenge

The Virginia Birdies came to my college, VSU, looking for a capable student who could replace their current website with a better designed one which was of the standard of the technologies today. Upon review of their website, the first problem I noticed was how poorly designed their current website was. It had broken links, poorly placed images, no responsive web design, and an absence of a clear call to action. The challenge was simple. This needed to be cleaned up, and a new website had to be built off the information on this one. They also requested that the website be built so that it could be easily maintained in-house by a Virginia Birdies member.

Solution

I began solving the challenge by coding up the new website using the React framework, but I soon realized this wouldn’t be the best way to go about it because it would be difficult for a member of the Virginia Birdies who didn’t have a tech background to update the website. This led me to do research and upon research, I concluded that web flow would be the best option. It allowed me to create a beautiful and responsive website, insert custom code to enhance the features of the website, and speed up the development time to deliver the website before the deadline. Most importantly, its content management system provides a user-friendly interface for editing content and updating the website: this can be done by anybody not just a web developer. This would enable the Virginia Birdies to keep their site up to date without needing my help.

Reflections

I was able to  deliver the project on time by the end of July 2023. The Virginia Birdies  have reported that they have gained 27 more members via the contact us page  on their website and current members are proud to have a medium to showcase  their beloved golf club to the public.

Hear what the Secretary of the club had to say:
"Brian helped us build a dynamic, feature-rich website for our golf club. Thanks to him, our golf club now has an outstanding online platform."
